A year ago, my small group instructor, a retired pediatrician, suggested that we read Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. I borrowed his copy and slowly read it.
The book is about Dr.Paul Farmer, who is an infectious disease specialist and an anthropologist. He graduated from Harvard with his MD and PhD in anthropology and has been working as a world's leading tuberculosis specialist and public health advocate in developing countries for his entire life. Tracy Kidder followed him around for a while to write about his life and job in Haiti.
You can find a taste of every aspect of medicine. Public health, global health, health policy and health care management are all included. Most importantly, Dr.Farmer's work portrays the essence of what it means to be a physician who deeply cares for others and an example of one's dedication to goodness of others. Highly recommended!
